Tattletail is a survival horror game created by Waygetter Electronics. The game features Furby-like toys called Tattletail (Baby Talking Tattletail), which the player must care for while avoiding the pursuit of its recalled predecessor, Mama. The game was released on Steam on December 28, 2016.

Summary

There's not much reference online but the original version, Mama Tattletail, was recalled years earlier... and I'm pretty sure I know why.

Tattletail is a short, story-driven first person horror game about everyone's favorite talking toy from the 90's. You opened your Tattletail before Christmas, and now he won't stay in his box. Can you keep him out of trouble until Christmas day? Or will Mama Tattletail find her baby and hunt you down first? I heard she was recalled after she ate a kid's eyes out. Just a rumor.

  • Obey Tattletail's mischievous demands.
  • Feed, brush, and recharge Tattletail... or he'll never shut up.
  • Shake your flashlight to charge it... but be careful. Someone might hear.
  • Do not wake up Mama Tattletail.
  • DO NOT MAKE LOUD NOISES NEAR MAMA TATTLETAIL.

This is our first game as Waygetter Electronics. We'd love to hear your feedback! Please report all sightings Mama Tattletail to Waygetter Electronics.

Gameplay

For the five nights leading up to Christmas, the player must tend to their Baby Talking Tattletail toy by feeding it, grooming it and allowing it to charge while completing a set of objectives on each night. While Baby Talking Tattletail isn't threat, it is prone to generating a lot of sound, which alerts Mama Tattletail to the player's location. While completing a set task, the player must avoid Mama by staying quiet when she is near (indicated by her mechanical noises). Failure to do so will result in Mama attacking the player in a jumpscare, ending the game.

Players acquire a shake flashlight to navigate in the darkness, but Mama Tattletail has ability to kill the player's flashlight when they look directly at her. Baby Talking Tattletail is afraid of the dark (and is quite vocal about it), creating a necessity to replenish the flashlight by shaking it quickly. However, the flashlight's shake also generates sound, so the player must be careful about when and where to shake.

Over the course of the game, a series of 'Gift Eggs', presumably laid by the Tattletail toy line, are placed throughout the house. Collecting all 22 of the eggs will result in the player achieving the 'good' ending of the game.

Trivia

  • The game was published under the name of the in-universe fictional toy company named Waygetter Electronics. In reality, the team was led by game designer, Ben Esposito, and consisted designer/co-designer, Geneva Hodgson, along with lead programmer, Tom Astle. Cartoonist, Ryann Shannon also stars as the voice of Tattletail.
  • Tattletail has received some criticism for its surface resemblance to the Five Nights at Freddy's series for featuring similar gameplay elements, but critics generally agree that the gameplay, which allows for free roaming, is distinctive.
